Spins Around a Star (OOTD)

How many times have you spun around the sun? I'm celebrating a birthday tomorrow, and while the idea of being 30-something years old is...well, just a little bit disheartening, the notion of having spun around a star 30-something times - well, that's not so bad at all.

When I think of it that way, I feel more like I'm part of some fantastic piece of inter-galactic choreography - dancing bits of stardust, swinging in graceful, lilting rhythm through space to the beating of a universal pulse.

So much better than, "getting older," don't you think?

Sweater: Climbing Trellis Cardigan, Anthropologie (similar here and here)
Dress: Pezza Dress, Anthropologie
Belt: Looping Lanes Belt, Anthropologie
Necklace: Umbrella Necklace, Miss November Studio

On a recent customer survey I filled out for a local restaurant, I noticed that this was the year I'd be moving into a new age category. A decidedly "middle-aged" sounding category. And despite knowing that age is really more a state of mind, that people generally assume I'm younger than I am, and that I'm well on my way to hitting a good number of the major milestones of the life-I-hope-to-live; despite wanting to feel more...well, evolved, I find myself slipping into a blue funk whenever I think about how old I actually am.

So I'm distracting myself by enjoying the Pezza Dress that I was able to buy using a gift card from my sis and brother-in-law combined with birthday money from my mom and dad. After all, if one is going to spin around a star a time or two or more, what better to wear than a pretty dress?

Oh, and speaking of spinning around stars, I want to wish a very happy birthday to my dear, much older friend, Lisa. She had the (mis)fortune of being born a day before me, and has heard about it ever since I found out, way back in the 3rd grade.

P.S. If you're planning to attend the In Pursuit of Pretty Things Anthropologie Shopping Event coming up in June, please let us know your availability by filling out the poll at the top of the right-hand sidebar. Thanks!

  4. Happy, happy birthday Carol! I am sure I'm older than you as I have been in the "middle age" category on surveys for a while now. Just tell that blue funk to go away! There are so many reasons to be grateful for our age. I am wiser, more mature, more stylish, more accomplished, have more children, a better marriage, more experienced, financially better off, etc than my younger self. I'm sure its the same for you too. Now where's my Pezza dress?

  6. Happy birthday! I wish you the very best! And hey, if 30s are the new 20s, you're nowhere near middle age. It's all about attitude and how you feel.

  7. I turned the big 3-0 last year and I survived...you'll be ok, I promise! =) It's weird being in that next decade though! So those shoes are the star of this outfit, for sure...holy cute! The dress and cardi are very cute as well though, don't get me wrong. You look great! Hope you have a great day!

Thanks, Tien! And yes, they do say the 30's are the new 20's, etc. Haha, I say that youth is wasted on the young, and now I'm really sounding old... ;)

Oh, Jenni, if only I was just starting my 30s! Haha, I'm actually VERY well established in my 30s now, which is just...yes. Just that. But thanks! I love these shoes too. =D

You're absolutely right! And yes, I like everything about where I am in my life better, than I did ten years ago. Where IS your Pezza dress? =)

  14. Oh I totally feel you on entering that "new age bracket"...especially now that Anthropologie includes those parameters in their reviews! I just completed a "milestone" circuit around the sun in March...and I sincerely hope that the 30's are indeed the new 20's because then I can claim 40 is the new 30...right? I did actually get carded last friday at dinner when I ordered a glass of wine, so I can't complain too much. The waitress said "...well, if you look 30 or under, we card you." I still can't decide if it was just a ploy for a better tip or not...haha!

  15. Happy tomorrow birthday Carol! The Pezza is lovely on you. I just turned 30ish recently and moved into a new age bracket as well. Y'know, I wasn't upset at all. I quite like where I'm at in life. I especially like how I celebrated the day - ziplining in Costa Rica! :)

  16. Happy Birthday! The Pezza looks stunning (and now I REALLY want it, which I know is so enjoyable as a blogger, to pass along a fixation to someone else!) and just think, I bet back in your 20s there's no way you could have worn givenchy platform clogs...
The only time my age bothers me directly is in answering those stats questions. I think they need to make a 27-45 category instead of ending everything at 35...'cause I ain't old, that's for sure...

  17. Happy Birthday! Carol's Intergalactic Birthday Ballet is an event I'd attend :) I love your concept and will apply it to my own bracket shifting event next year.
If you ever have a shopping event up in LA I'll be sure to try and attend!
    Your outfit is awesome!

  18. A spinning, intergalactic dance - what a beautiful way to look things! Thanks for sharing that with us. And happy birthday, Carol!

When I turned 30 last year and proclaimed myself "middle-aged," all of my elder sisters immediately chastised me, saying that this was ridiculous. Apparently in my family, you don't get there 'til you're 50...or 55. xD
