Inspiration Revisited: One Shirt, Four Ways

Back in February, I blogged about this styling page from Neiman Marcus's website, featuring a blue camp shirt:

Back in February, it was still way too cold to actually think of wearing skirts or shorts bare-legged, or even open-toed sandals. Now that it's finally June and things are starting to warm up, I decided to revisit these outfit stylings and see if I can recreate some of these, using things from my own closet. A few weeks ago, I picked up this chambray shirt from Target's Merona brand, and I love it! It occurred to me that it would work in place of the camp shirt, and well, the rest you can see for yourself:

Casual Printed Skirt Pairing
I thought the Apothecary Skirt captured the colors and floral print
of the skirted pairing above pretty well..

Top: Merona Chambray Shirt, Target (similar here and here and here)
Skirt: Apothecary Skirt, Anthropologie

Dressier Skirt Pairing
The pleats and sturdy fabric in this more structured skirt
allow for a slightly dressier look for this otherwise casual top.

Skirt: Lillith Striped Skirt, Kate Spade (Do I look like the cat who ate the canary?)
Shoes: Jimmy Choo Phoenix Espadrilles in nude patent (similar here and here and here)

And because a woman's wardrobe cannot live on skirts alone...

With Shorts
A pair of short with fun details (printed, tied, or culotte style) makes this shirt
just perfect for a summer's day of...well, pretty much anything. ^_-

Shorts: Heatwave Shorts, Anthropologie (from summer 2010; other printed shorts options here, here, and here)

With Pants
Untucked, this shirt is long enough to work as a tunic, when paired with cropped skinny pants/jeans.
Outfits don't get a whole lot easier than this, and the longer lengths are perfect for cooler evenings

Pants: Denim Minnie, J. Crew (summer 2009; similar styles here, here, and here)

I love it when something in my closet can work as hard as this top. What do you have in your closet that seems to go with everything?

  1. I love this post - what a great idea!  And you know what, I bought that top last week myself!  Isn't it great?  I have been looking for a nice denim shirt for a while so I was happy to scoop up such a nice yet reasonably priced one!  I actually thought it would look great with the Apothecary Skirt but had not tried it yet - I'm happy to see that it works! =)

  3. I love it when items are so versatile and they go with everything! I try my best to pick most of my items to be worn multiple ways so that I get the most bang for my buck. Your chambray top looks like it's gonna see a lot of awesome outfits in the future. =)

  4. Oh my goodness- I love these so much.  From the chambray-floral combo and the awesomeness of chambray-stripes (oh pretty, pretty Kate Spade! Nice choice!)  to the cute patterned shorts and leg-lengthening minnies!  Love!

  5. the '1 item x ways' is always my favorite part of any magazine, and even better is seeing it put to the text in real life. that shirt looks great in every outfit! i've found that a plain silk or linen dress is very versatile for me- i'll ruche them with safety pins and wear them as shirts, put them under blazers, or over shorts, or tucked under skirts.. only problem is i spill on myself a lot so dry cleaning is a pain.

I love those shorts! But I think my favorite look is with the pants. So simple, clean, classic, comfy, and the shoes look amazing with them!

  8. Oooh! Ruching with safety pins! I've never tried that before...how do you do it exactly? I'm very very intrigued by this idea... =D Would you mind elaborating?

  12. It's a great rule of thumb to consider any item's versatility - and how well it'll play with the other items in your closet -  when making a purchase. I agree with you wholeheartedly on that. =)

  13. What a great exercise! This chambray shirt was a great buy because it is so versatile. I love all of the stylings, but I'm especially drawn to the shorts and pants look. I'm going to check my closet and see if there is an item that I can do this with. Thanks Carol!
