Kate Spade Surprise Sale! (And it included a Serious Surprise!)

Hi everyone!

I'm here to break my long silence (so sorry about that - things have been moving merrily along in Carol-the-activist-and-public-servant-world, and I'm still trying to find about 6 more hours hidden in the day to get everything in, that I'd like) because a shopping miracle of sorts occurred today.

I know, I know - it's a little silly. But you know how we all have those things "that got away?" Because we couldn't afford it at the time, or because we hesitated, or because we had other priorities - whatever.

So, one of those things for me is the Kate Spade All Typed Up Clyde. Back when I first saw it, I felt like I couldn't justify the full price purchase for such a quirky bag. And then, later, when it went on sale, I hesitated because I was on a shopping ban at the time. And shortly after that, it disappeared from view completely, and despite sporadic checks on eBay for it over the years, I never saw it again.

UNTIL THIS MORNING.

That's right!!! This morning, my inbox greeted me with the notification that Kate Spade is having a 48-hour Surprise Sale. And what did my eyes behold in the "handbags" section but this?

Two and a half years after I first laid eyes on it, I found (and purchased - as a belated birthday/Mother's Day gift for myself) the handbag that got away. There's a part of me that knows it's still not the most practical purchase and there's a part of me that also thinks that I should be updating my professional wardrobe (more on that later) and that a candy-apple red handbag emblazoned with an old-school typewriter keyboard isn't contributing to that. But I also know that this fun, playful bag has indelibly wormed its way into my life somehow and well, there you have it. When something as unique as this comes around over and over again, I imagine we're allowed.

And speaking of Kate Spade, here are some of the latest offerings that have piqued my interest:

1. 'Elaina' Jacket (Love the retro-silhouette, geometric pattern, and how it'll go equally well layered over a dress, slacks, or jeans.)
2. Natural Trompe L'oeil 'Mariella' Dress (There's nothing like the combination of a bateau neckline, cap sleeves, fitted waist, and flared skirt, is there? And the neutral colors make this dress understated while the print makes it memorable.)
3. 'Fresia' Sandal (I love the black-and-cream combo - so classic - and the flash of gold in the heel? Perfection.)

What about you? Are you checking out the Kate Spade Surprise Sale?

Hoping you're having a great day. Thanks for stopping by!

  2. One of the first times I ever really WANTED something from Kate Spade was when I saw their camera bag a few years ago. Ever since, I've been kicking myself for not buying it when I had the chance. It was honestly too expensive at $230... but today it was $99!! I squealed with delight not only to see it again but at the incredible price!! Needless to say, I bought it, baby!!!! :D katejones.me

    1. I completely felt the same way today, when I saw the All Typed Up Clyde. Hahaha, I'm sort of kicking myself for not splurging for expedited shipping. I want it tomorrow! You know, to make up for lost time. ;) Glad to hear you scored the camera bag!

  3. I thought of you when I saw the bag on sale this morning. BTW, were you on local San Diego TV the other day?

    1. Hi Vida! I hope you're doing well. Yes, I was on local San Diego news the other day. =) My group, Organizing for Action San Diego, hosted a Mother's Day March for Gun Violence Prevention in Balboa Park, and we got covered by three news channels - CW 6, CBS 8, and KUSI 9.

  4. I thought of you immediately when I saw it on the sale. I might have to buy the Pride and Prejudice book clutch, but I am trying to keep away.

  6. I think I had the same reaction you did when I saw the Clyde. After having thought about it for years—I even have a Kate Spade greeting card in the All Typed Up style framed on my wall—I wasn't able to resist the compulsion to buy it right away when it resurfaced yesterday. Uncharacteristically, I did go for expedited shipping, so I'll get it tomorrow! I cannot wait.

I wondered if you noticed something: the background behind the keys is now black instead of gray. I'm pretty certain that I like the black better anyway, but I thought it was an interesting change. And I also noticed that this version was made specifically for KSNY outlets. But it's the same model name, so they can't have deviated much from the original. Intriguing, right?

Anyway, I've been wanting to dish about this since I bought the All Typed Up Clyde yesterday, so I was excited to see your post. I hope you'll eventually share photos of your bag in action—I'd love ideas for how to "wear" it, so to speak. Thanks!

    1. Aaahhhh! You were smart!!! I didn't think ahead, darn it. Oh well. I suppose I've been without it for 2.5 years, and I'll make it for a few days more.

I didn't notice the difference between the gray background for the keys and the black (I was way too excited just to see it again) - I think I prefer the gray but don't object to the black.

Can't wait to get it! Let me know how the quality of the bag is, when you get yours. :)

    2. OK! My Clyde arrived, and I have more information for you. First, it's beautiful; I think you'll be as happy with it as I am.

This bag absolutely has a gray background for the keys. Why the one pictured in the Special Sale was black I have no idea. (I'll be curious to see whether yours is gray, too.)

And the tag says "clyde / WKRU1995 / all typed up / fireengnerd (610)." Underneath the barcode, it says "like style 495.00 / our price $395."

So I do think this was made for the outlet store, but I don't understand what "like style" means. Is it different from the original in any way? It came with the cute storage bag and has the black printed lining, so that all seems top notch. But I would think that all these discrepancies would be grounds to challenge their "all sales final" policy on this item—if anyone had a change of heart, which I don't think I will!

I'm 100% pleased with it. It's the culmination of years of wondering and wishing I'd bought it back in 2010! I hope my dissection of the particulars doesn't take one ounce away from anyone's enjoyment—it shouldn't. I'm just a researcher at heart and want to understand it all.

Now to figure out which outfit I can wear with it today . . . :)

  7. It's a gorgeous bag! I had lusted over the Clyde for years. Alas, I live in Singapore & KS doesn't allow me to use a shipping company in the States to forward this package here. :( My heart stopped when I saw it on the Surprise Sale & I could admire its picture only. Lucky you! The bag's really really adorable!

  9. I felt the exact same way about the Orla Kiely Flower Girl bag. I think it was about $300 when it first came out and I just couldn't afford it at the time. I saw it a few times on Amazon for about 25% off, but still couldn't afford it. Recently, Orla Kiely restocked some past season items and lo and behold, the Orla Kiely Flower Bag was in stock for only $177! You'd think I would've pounced on it at this point, but I STILL didn't have the budget for it and couldn't bring myself to charge it on my credit card. And now it's out of stock :( I guess I will continue to hunt for this purse on eBay, but I'm seriously still kicking myself for not buying it at $177. Oh well. I did, however, purchase the cardigan in the same print from eBay after convincing myself that I HAD to have it after seeing Zooey Deschanel wear it on New Girl. For now, that's good enough for me!

I love the Clyde purse by the way. I'm in the same boat as you as far as needing to "update my professional wardrobe." But I just can't help fun and quirky things!

  10. Does anyone know where I could possibly buy a used All Typed Up? I've been looking for one and just am not sure if I could spend full price on it.. but I've been drooling for years.

  11. I know this is an old post, but I can't help but comment... I saw this bag in the May 2013 surprise sale, and I waited too long, and the bag sold out. I was devastated. I watched my email for the last EIGHT MONTHS, hoping the moment would resurface again, so no avail.

Until last night. Kate Spade Surprise Sale email - I clicked on the link, but my expectations were low. Perhaps I might find something else I like? But... what is that?!? Lo and behold, the All Typed Up Clyde!!! despite the fact that I am totally broke, I added it to my cart and checked out immediately. There was no way I was going to miss this opportunity a second time.

It sold out a few hours later.

I will be wrapping it up in a box and opening it on my birthday in May :)

  12. I feel like crying for missing the sale. I missed the January sales by a day because I wasn't on the mailing list. . . yes, I know, dumb! I hope they have another one! There are about 30 on ebay but they want 300+ and I am not convinced that they were $300 on the Secret Sale. Ohhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

  13. I, too, pined over All Typed Up since it's original debut 3 years ago. I was SO lucky to catch the sale in January and get my hands on one. It is beautiful - the leather doesn't seem as soft as some of my other KS items but, regardless, it's gorgeous! FYI - it was $220 in January - in case you are looking on e-bay.

  14. I am obsessed with this bag! Eyeing them on ebay and highly considering the splurge. How are you liking it and how's it holding up?
