Oh, I did that last year (it was a LOOOOOONG three months). After the moratorium, though, I was back to my old bad habits. I'm hoping this different approach will help me make some longer term changes. We'll see. =)

The impulse buying is what kills me. If I could be more thoughtful in my purchasing, I think I'd have a much easier time of it. You might be right about the wish list method being more effective, but for now, I'm going to try to stick to one purchase a month. It'd be just like me, after all, to front-load my wish list with way too many things, and decide I "can't decide" between them and just get them all, "because they were on my wish list."

Oh, that's quite good! I like that! I'll have to think over what my substitute for adding to my clothing collection should be, and how best to execute that. To be honest, it can be challenging, what with a shopping/style blog to maintain (occupational hazard, you know), but I'm going to find ways around it, as much as possible. Sounds like a good list! I just called a moratorium on clothes until the end of March, and for me, that includes any and all GEAR (somehow, I differentiate work clothes and work-out clothes, but I have a penchant for both, especially really nice stuff from Patagonia).

Those are great resolutions! I started telling myself that it isn't nessessarily about reaching all these goals 100% but to at least make and effort and try.

I don't know if it's realistic to say I will not ever shop again, but as long as I am more conscious of what I'm buying and more under control than out of control- I consider that a win! It's not always about perfection- sometimes it's about effort!

Hey, I think that's my resolution list too! I had an epic wishlist of things I loved in the fall and with all the gonzo sales (and post christmas return popbacks) there's been some, uh,recidivism, but I'm hopeful for the next few months since I won't be buying any spring merchandise for awhile!

I'd love to try the one item rule, but I think the best rule for me is to stick to a wishlist that has to be on sale, avoid adding to it, and NO IMPULSE BUYING! I'm getting better at that, mostly by avoiding stores as much as possible!

Happy New Year! My twin daughters were born in the year of the Golden Dragon, so this is their year too! One adage I try to keep in mind when making resolutions to stop doing something is that it is productive to substitute another activity. (Dr. Phil says this a lot). For me, if I spend my lunch hour at the office gym (or even just on a long walk in a direction OTHER than downtown shopping district) I could handle two resolutions: buy less, exercise more!

You certainly can do all of these! The shopping bit may be difficult because it's hard to go cold turkey on any ingrained habit, but it's not impossible. You've just got to have the right mindset going into all of this. If you're resentful of the resolution from the start, it's likely to not last. Maybe set a date each month where you plan a shopping trip to buy that one special item - treat yourself to a relaxing lunch or a glass of wine with cheese, maybe take a relaxing bath. It could be your own "Carol Day"! Believe me, I know it's hard to not be able to shop to your hearts content, but next year you will proud to say you did it and maybe you will learn some new things along the way :)

I think your list of resolutions is very practical. I'm really trying to not just cut back spending but buy more wisely. My closet was looking like the sake room at Anthro and I realized many of the things I own are cute but not 100% me. Any new purchases must be ME. I get caught up in sales way too much and end up with way too much. I've found that by buying more responsibly, I'm spending less overall.

Happy New Year! You can do it. I have resolved to doing much of the same to limit spending and increase savings and be more mindful about all the general aspects of my daily life. I think these are common goals for a lot of people this year, so you are not alone in this quest. We can do it. :-)
